Lucky Zodiac – Intro

One of Microgaming’s new releases this September is Lucky Zodiac, but have the stars aligned perfectly to ascend this slot to success? From the first glimpse, this Asian themed slot doesn’t harbour much more to it than a few classic features and the regular arrangement of gameplay that Microgaming always offer. However, there are a few glistening rays of hope for Lucky Zodiac, for example its Gamble feature, so we investigate further if this slot, launched yesterday, deserves your attention.

About the slot
Whether or not you take astrology seriously,  Microgaming would be lucky to get absolutely raving reviews for Lucky Zodiac and they probably know it. Taking an old and time-tested template for a five reel and twenty payline slot, they’ve plonked in some new symbols and hoped for the best. In our book, that doesn’t even count as a new release, but we had to check it out anyway to get the full picture.

What’s up with the spiritual theme?

As if we haven’t had enough of the magical and the mysterious, Microgaming go and release yet another Chinese themed slot, that’s drawing on the powers of the mighty Zodiac to entertain the players. Well, we’d say that hasn’t totally worked out, not only because the slot is predictable in its game mechanics, but it also does nothing for us when compared to the truly contemporary slots by NetEnt, Elk Studios and the likes.

One thing that it does have going for it is the fact that the Lucky Zodiac symbol changes come every Chinese New Year, so it is one of the very few slots (actually, the only one we know, but we can’t say that’s it’s truly the only one out there) that has a dynamic set of symbols.

Whilst that is exciting on paper, in reality it does nothing to liven up the gameplay, which is rather dreary in audiovisual sense and repetitive in its payouts. And we’re pretty sure a different zodiac symbol next year will do nothing to change it.

Swoosh, smash, boom!

The fireworks and the crackers try to make amends for the shabby theme, but fall flat, because the graphics aren’t entirely up to scratch. If there is anything we’d like to see in a video slot, it’s not pixels.

On the other hand, it’s not as if we didn’t expect it. Microgaming has become a bit of an assembly line factory in pumping out slots that are identical in its audiovisual aspects and all equally unambitious in the graphics department.

Game Features: Classics + Quadruple Your Winnings
Call it classic, or as we prefer – predictable. The game doesn’t have any ‘features’ per se, but there are the usual suspects.

First of all, there are the extra spins, a dozen of them to be precise. They can be triggered whenever you get three or more Firecrackers scatter symbols up on the reels and they can be re-triggered whilst in a extra spins round too.

There are also multipliers of up to seven times and there is the Gamble Feature, which can see you double or even quadruple your wins. We do have to note that the feature looks like its being played on a worn-out casino table out of 90s, just so you know.

Perhaps most interesting is the ability to select one’s Zodiac sign before starting the game, to have the symbol light up on the screen and bring you larger wins than other symbols. Nice touch, but not quite enough to get us to forget the gameplay and the performance to win us over.
